This album completely caught me off guard. I’m a huge Sounds fan. And when I saw this album advertised in a local music newspaper, I was ecstatic. That said, I don’t think anything prepared me for the musical direction of Something To Die For.
Right off the gate, it pounds electronic. And it doesn’t really let up! The Sounds are known for being a catchy indie-pop group (with a Swedish flair). So when I first heard the loud keyboards, I anticipated some sort of gradual build up into a rock anthem. It never happened.
Lead singer Maja Ivarsson howls with an immediacy not found on earlier works, keeping pace with the dance beats. I love it. Critics have raked them over the coals for becoming too mainstream, but I dig the bold sound. It may sound a tad regurgitated 80’s, but what’s wrong with having a little fun?
