Placebo is a band that has grown on me over the years. I remember when they first were big in the late 90’s with “Pure Morning”. That song didn’t really stick with me. It wasn’t until Sleeping With Ghosts that I would have considered myself a fan. In view of this, I didn’t even realize that Battle For The Sun had been released in 2009. I don’t call myself a super fan.
Anyway, one listen through Battle For The Sun and I was addicted to its instant hooks and riffs. For the most part, this album plays from start to finish as one cohesive piece of work. It’s as straight-forward of a rock album as I’ve heard from Placebo. My only complaint would be that because it’s so guitar driven, the dramatic vocals of Brian Molko are less powerful.
Reviews of the album were mixed. Some liked the unified rock sound, while others thought the band ended up sounding bland and uninspired. I’m not sure what’s next for Placebo, but I pledge to pay more attention!
